Spirituality Amidst Modernity: Sufi Ritual Practices and the Dynamics of Tariqah Orders in Urban Surabaya

Abstract

This article examines Sufi ritual practices within the context of urban life, focusing on the dynamics of three principal tariqah orders in Surabaya: the Qadiriyyah wa Naqshbandiyyah Order (TQN) at Pondok Pesantren Assalafi Al-Fithrah, the Majelis Shalawat Muhammad as a representation of neo-classical urban Sufism, and the Ukhsafi Copler Community (UCC) as a variant of neo-urban Sufism. Employing a phenomenological qualitative approach grounded in in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentary analysis, this study demonstrates that Sufi ritual practices in urban settings have undergone significant adaptation without abandoning the substantive teachings of classical Sufi doctrine. The practices of dhikr, suluk, bay'ah, and tawajjuhan have been reconfigured in accordance with the dense and dynamic rhythms of contemporary urban life. The principal findings reveal three interconnected patterns of transformation: first, the flexibilization of the time and place of ritual performance; second, a shift in the murshid-disciple relationship toward more dialogical and adaptive forms of spiritual guidance; and third, the emergence of socio-therapeutic functions of ritual practice as a response to the psychological pressures and social fragmentation characteristic of modern city life. These transformations collectively suggest that urban Sufism operates as a dynamic tradition capable of institutional self-renewal. This article argues that urban Sufism in Surabaya represents not merely an escapism from modernity, but rather an active negotiation between classical Islamic spiritual tradition and the demands of contemporary urban society, contributing to broader scholarly discussions on the resilience of religious traditions within late-modern contexts.
